The challenges and opportunities of incorporating community-based learning into STEM subjects

Lead Institution: University of Bristol
Collaborating with: Bournemouth University, University of the West of England

This is a sub-project of Get STEM working: innovation with employer and student engagement

Outputs

  • A report looking at key findings from the project that will include: issues and expectations around setting up projects; how projects were supported; what the outcomes were; the potential sustainability of such projects, and how these projects fit into the wider context of the university environment.  The report will also show how the NCCPE’s framework for the assessment of student learning from public engagement was tested and developed, using this project as a case study.
  • A list of community-based organisations willing to host engineering students to undertake third year projects.
  • Resources for use in setting up community-based learning projects, including agreements for students and community partners.
  • A case study of how community-based learning has been applied in the engineering curriculum.
  • A story of how these resources have been used to effect change told through a Creative Learning Journey developed for the project. To find out more about Creative Learning Journeys visit the CreativeSTEM section of our website.

Project outputs are listed on the left of this page.

Outcomes will include:

  • A greater understanding of the issues and possibilities around incorporating experiential learning into degree programmes at the University of Bristol, and shared across the South West and whole HE community
  • Greater contact between the engineering faculty and community based organisations
  • Greater understanding of how community organisations can benefit from the involvement of STEM undergraduates
  • Development of the community-based learning practitioners network established by the NCCPE to include people from STEM departments in SW universities.
