In terms of the project's future legacy and sustainability, the video materials will be enhanced by the production of 'wrap around' materials, sets of activity ideas for use in conjunction with the video resources and tailored to the following target audiences:
It is hoped that the production of such materials (that will be made available through these web-pages) will help to enhance the usefulness and uptake of the video resources.
The very positive reception that the videos have received from programme participants on the 'Learning and Teaching in HE' programme at the University of Exeter will mean that the staff-facing videos will be utilised into the future and across other staff development contexts. The College of Engineering, Mathematics and Physical Sciences will also continue to make good use of the videos on their webpages for potential students. Since embarking on the project, the College has put significant additional resource into video-based material promoting STEM subjects at Exeter – the project may have helped to ‘sow the seeds’ of other such initiatives designed to reach out to a bigger and more diverse group of learners.
The project has brought together groups of Exeter staff involved in a wide range of activities, and has made valuable links between the work Academic Development professionals undertake in conjunction with Colleges, and that of the Recruitment, Outreach and indeed Marketing teams at the University.
Externally, STEMNET plan to use the videos in their outreach activities. Planning schemes of work takes time and the videos may not be put to use for this purpose until next year. However, the contact has recently been followed up, and we are looking forward to hearing more about these plans and the outputs involved. In addition, work will continue to promote the videos around relevant networks, conferences and forums to encourage wider take up; the universities of Southampton and Bath are already looking as to how they might make best use of the resources.
This project has extended regional networks – and indeed, those beyond the South West – and lasting contacts with colleagues in the schools sector have been made that can now be drawn upon in staff development activity for STEM, sustaining the legacy of this project through people as well as resources.
