Lead Institution: Bournemouth University
Collaborating with: STEMNET, University of Bath, University of the West of England
This seminar, held at Plymouth University in January 2012, followed on from an earlier seminar at the University of the West of England in November 2011 that introduced PAL schemes. The seminar explored setting up PAL schemes, drawing on the experiences of those that had recently done so, and there was an opportunity to view outreach transition resources developed by the University of Exeter.
An agenda for the seminar can be downloaded below:
In addition, the University of Bath developed a report providing information for those institutions considering the establishment of PAL schemes. The report includes advice on the resources needed to ensure that PAL becomes a sustainable and effective tool for improving the learning experience of students across the institution. It can be downloaded below:
Report on Implementing PAL schemes
The project has also produced PAL Guidelines for those considering setting up PAL. In addition, during the course of the project, a number of universities established PAL - their experiences are captured here.
Marcia Ody from the University of Manchester described the work of the national centre in supporting the ongoing development of PAL in the UK. She talked about the background to PAL/PASS in the UK and also touched on the support provided by the national centre - e.g. supervisor training and PAL leader conferences.
Carolyn Gentle, PALS co-ordinator at Plymouth University, gave a talk on PAL leaders and mentees - What we are learning from our PALS@Plymouth pilot – is it giving leaders and students everything we hoped?
Ismini Vasileiou and Dr Hywel Evans, PALS Academic Co-ordinators at Plymouth University, gave their perspective with a presentation entitled The expectations and experiences of academic co-ordinators in Computing fast track and Chemistry.
Jane Rowe, Academic Developer at the University of Exeter, presented video resources aimed to enhance outreach and staff development in STEM.
The day concluded with one-minute spotlight sessions which gave participants the opportunity to talk about the work being carried out at their own institutions.
