Uni Outreach > Think About Physics

Description

Subject: Physics

“Think about Physics” are two one-day conferences for 100 students arranged annually by the Department of Physics at the University of Bristol.

The conferences aim to encourage more women to think about studying Physics and present them with a positive image of scientific careers. Girls from local schools, who are doing their GCSEs and are about to make their A-level choices, come for a one-day programme.  This includes:

  • lectures,
  • demonstrations and practicals and,
  • the chance to meet and talk with women who are working in Physics or related areas

Demonstrations and practicals differ slightly from year to year, but in the past have included the girls making liquid crystal thermometers and watching comets being made. The day always concludes with an "Ice-cream Lecture" with plenty of samples afterwards.

During the day all the girls have the opportunity to meet and question a number of women who work in many different fields but who all have an A-level in Physics. The girls are encouraged to ask the women about their studies and careers to help them decide if an A-level in Physics is for them.

Target Audience

Schoolgirls aged 14 and 15.
