Uni Outreach > Robotics / Mindstorm Days

Description

Subject: Information and Communication Technologies (ICT)

These are days or sessions designed to improve students’ understanding and application of systems and control using software that enables children to learn how to programme and build robots with a variety of mechanisms. Children / adults work in teams developing essential teamwork and communication skills. Each day has a particular theme or context that has a problem solving challenge.

Current themes are:

  • Arctic Challenge – a robot is needed to rescue the scientists from polar bears and repair experimental equipment on the Arctic ice. Can Dr Justin Case survive?
  • City Sights – robots are used to develop and manage a township by completing building work, harvesting fruits, switching on a wind power turbine.
  • Mars Mission – At last we have the technology to send humans to the planet Mars but what is needed to habitate the planet? Robots are used to sweep the dust off solar panels, launch a space capsule and rescue a ‘mars’ buggy.
  • No Limits - uses robots around the home to help people carry out tasks such as feeding the pets, putting food on the table and playing basketball.
  • Ocean Odyssey - explores problems associated with the health and use of the oceans
  • Nano Quest - the smallest technology solving problems of the future.
  • Power Puzzle – Robots undertake tasks that focus on the efficient and alternative use of energy such as wind power solar energy, etc

Target Audience

Both children and adults.
