Uni Outreach > Numeracy Project

Description

Subject: Maths

The primary aim of the University of West of England's numeracy project is to raise attainment in numeracy at Key Stage 3 by providing personalised, weekly, one-to-one coaching for pupils who have failed to achieve the required Level 4 in numeracy in their Key Stage 2 SATs. One of the key aspects of Level 4 numeracy is the ability to apply mathematics to practical contexts. Those failing to achieve a Level 4 will clearly be disadvantaged in relation to other secondary subjects where numeracy is a feature - for example, science, design technology and geography. It is felt that encouraging and supporting pupils to improve their numeracy skills at the start of their secondary careers will have a positive effect on their broader educational attainment.

The project recruits and trains 10-12 UWE students to act as Numeracy Coaches. The students recruited are either studying towards a Maths degree or have a C+ A-Level in Maths (or equivalent). Each Numeracy Coach works with five pupils providing them with 30-45 minutes support each term-time week from November until May.

At present, three schools participate in the scheme (four numeracy coaches per school), with 20 pupils participating in each school. Funding for the numeracy project has come from the Aimhigher Innovation Fund, so this has enabled the project to run. Full support has also been received from UWE's Outreach Centre and also from Bristol's Local Authority.

Target Audience

Year 7 pupils (Key Stage 3).
