The Axe Valley Biodiesel project involved a collaboration between the University of Exeter and the students at Axe Valley Community College. The students collected waste vegetable oil from local pubs, restaurants and canteens which they then analysed before converting into biodiesel for standard diesel engines.

The project was located in a modified shipping container within the College's grounds and was run by year 10 GCSE single science option students and year 12 A-level chemistry students.

The project also involved other departments in the College as below:

  • Business and enterprise
  • Accounting
  • Marketing
  • Press relations
  • Web design

The biodiesel was sold to school staff and local businesses who had contributed with profit made used within the College to fund further green projects.
