In the past, the University of Bath's Outreach Team has run a 2 Days 'Investigating Crime' workshop. This event aimed to raise the participants’ enthusiasm and understanding of science by offering them opportunities not generally available within schools due to curricula or resource limitations.
As well as encouraging young people to develop their critical thinking and teamwork skills, participants met with, and learnt from, University lecturers. They also had the opportunity to work in the University's laboratories and to use equipment and tools that weren't available in their schools.
In the Biology and Biochemistry laboratory in the morning, the pupils used the techniques of Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) and gel electrophoresis to identify matched DNA samples at the crime scene. During the afternoon, they worked alongside pupils from other schools on a critical thinking exercise.
