Description

Subject: Mechanical Engineering

Headstart is a residential 5 day course for pre-A level students organised through the Engineering Development Trust (EDT) for those interested in Mechanical Engineering. 32 UK citizen students from national and international background attend, with Gifted & Talented groups commonly targeted.

During the 5 days, students experience a mixture of lectures, laboratories and practical problems culminating in a competitive group task. When the University of Bath hosted Headstart, this task was a Dragster Grand Prix that saw the students design and build a spring propelled dragster that raced over a timed 10m course.

Within the broad topic of Mechanical Engineering, Headstart aims to include topics relating to degree disciplines of:

  • Aerospace Engineering
  • Automotive Engineering
  • Design
  • Manufacturing
  • Mechanical

Students live as undergraduates in campus accommodation and are guided by young and enthusiastic staff and students.

Target Audience

AS-level students.
