First Lego League is an international robotics competition where teams of school children build and programme robots to carry out a series of missions. The robots are developed over a period of eight weeks in schools either within curriculum time or as a lunch-time or after-school club. Teams comprise up to 10 children.
There have been 11 years of themed challenges. An example theme from a past year is ‘Power Puzzle’ where schools built robots to carry out tasks associated with the use of energy and alternative energy sources. In the SW, some 60 schools participate each year. Prizes are awarded for: robot performance, teamwork, research presentation, and technical design. The overall winners from each region go forward to the National Final.
